My Journal

My truck continues to give me trouble! I put it in the river last Easter (a year ago) and have made considerable repairs since then.

I am trying to wrap up my time in Turkana so I can head to America for the summer.

I replaced the steering rack last week and had my mechanic inspect everything to make sure the truck is able to make the journey to Nairobi. He assured me it was.

Sunday, the bottom of the radiator cracked!

I took my truck back to my mechanic on Monday. He was surprised to learn I had a problem as the truck just passed his inspection 3 days before. I told him my radiator was cracked. It has been an interesting time here in Turkana. Not only is there a restructuring of power in the government. There seems to be a restructuring in the work of God as well.

Satan has fought hard to destroy the unity we have enjoyed from day one. Sin is a dangerous thing and comes in all forms. It affects us all.

Jealously took root in the heart of a couple of men. It was given room to grow. However, God is able!

He is able to root it out! He is able to mend destroyed relationships! He is able, He is able, HE IS ABLE!

Much ground has been covered in this area. Unity is back! All of our churches are working together again and all have started Bible studies in new villages. We have hope and pray that God will allow these new studies to grow into churches.

I am so thankful for the struggles we have endured. It is in our darkest hour that we can truly appreciate the presence of Light!

Much love,
Eddie Ekiru

Thank you to my good friend, George, for keeping my feet to the fire about this journal!

Since my last entry, I had 2 friends from Tuscaloosa, AL come for a visit. Jeff Gilbert and Ron McInnish were here the first 2 weeks of October. They helped build an addition to our church in Kalokol. They also travelled to Lokwar Angileso when we held our baptismal and organizational service. 33 were baptized and formed Lokwar Angileso Landmark Baptist Church.

Jeff and Ron were such a blessing while they were here! THANKS FOR COMING OVER TO HELP US GUYS!

Josh recently changed his return ticket. He will stay now until 30 January. His sister and my good friend, Heather will be coming over the middle of January too.

We held our 6th annual marriage seminar the end of October. Julius and Violet Kalande came up from Western Kenya to teach again. It was a great week...but very challenging as well. The question was raised, WHEN will Christian Turkanans begin to APPLY the Word to their marriages??? Pray for Turkana!

We held the last class for the Uvumilifu class the first week of November. They have now completed the Basic level in our Bible Institute and their graduation is 8 December.

There has been some major challenges develop the last 3 weeks. 2 pastors have resigned. Another is struggling with an issue that could destroy his testimony and greatly affect the testimony of our churches in Turkana. Please pray for us!

Josh and I travelled to Kalokol today to meet with the location Chief and take him to Lokwar Angileso. We are trying to buy a plot so we can build a church building. The councelor was not available today.

The meeting between the Chief and the village went extremely well. It was awesome for me to listen as they told the Chief their thoughts about me and how I have been a fulfillment to their many years of prayers for someone to come and teach them about God...me, just some boy from Sumter county, an answer to their many prayers??? God is Good!!! He uses the weak things to confound the mighty!!!

Since our return to Lodwar this evening, the councelor has returned to Kalokol. She would like for us to return tomorrow to collect her and travel back to Lokwar Angileso to finalize the land deal. We will head back in the morning. Please pray things go as planned.

Happy Thanksgiving from Turkana!
Ekiru

Much has happened since my last post!

The biggest change has been to my household. Josh Thompson, a very good friend of mine and a brother to my Pastor, has come to stay with me until after the New Year. While it has only been a couple of weeks, he is proving to be a huge blessing to me and the work.

Josh and I showed the Samson film at our church in the village of Napetet. Hundreds filled the road, our church compound and the surrounding plots to watch. It was the first time we showed this old film...which is in English. I had to translate it to Swahili and Pastor Michael then translated to Turkana. The village cheered every time God imparted strength to Samson. I love watching films with Turkanans as they celebrate God's Word.

We travelled to our church in Nangolipus where Moses is Pastor. He is feeling called of God to leave this church he planted back in 2008 and carry the Gospel to a new village with the hopes of starting another church. While the church is a bit sad to be losing the only pastor they have every known, they are thrilled that others will be given the same chance they have to hear the Gospel. Moses last Sunday in Nangolipus is 28 October. Please pray for all involved in this time of transition.

Josh and I were invited by Pastor Stephen to come up to Kalokol to help in a day of evangelism. He also had 4 folks needing baptism. After a few hours of going hut to hut, 17 made a profession of faith. After a quick lunch, we all went to Lake Turkana. Under the authority of Landmark Baptist Church Kalokol, Josh baptized for the very first time. He did a great job! At dark, we showed the Ten Commandments film...with me translating to Swahili then Stephen to Turkana.

Josh, Pastors David & Michael, and I were invited to Naduat to help Pastor Josephat and our church in a day of evangelism. 14 made professions of faith. We also showed the Jesus film that night...which thankfully is in Turkana.

This week I have spent in the classroom at our Bible Institute. I taught through 1 Thessalonians and Pastor Michael taught through Philippians. After this week, the Upendo Class only has 1 seminar left (it will begin 26 November) before their graduation 8 December.

We will head to Lokwar Angileso Saturday for a weekend crusade. I ask for prayer for 2 reasons. First, this village was hit hard by Cholera in June and our Bible study suffered greatly. However, God has done much to gather folks back to hear the Word. We will be talking this weekend about organizing this 2 year old study into a church. Secondly, Josh and I will be sleeping out in this village. The risk of malaria is increased greatly because of their close location to Lake Turkana. While malaria is nothing new to me, I really do not want Josh to get sick.

Thanks for reading and praying!

Much love,
Ekiru

My good friend and my pastor's brother, Josh Thompson is flying into Nairobi Monday (tomorrow) night and on up to Lodwar Tuesday afternoon. He is planning to staying with me until the New Year.

I own a Honda 250cc dirt bike. I had it serviced in anticipation of needing a second mode of transport with Josh being here.

I decided to take it to church this morning, kind of a test run.

On the way back, I was enjoying the ride and nearing the river. The brush is more dense there...and taller. I rounded a curve and low and behold there is a herd of camels laying in the road!

There was no where to go and nothing to do but hit the brakes as hard as I could and lay the bike down.

I am happy to report no camels were harmed...maybe a little scared though. I wish I could say the same for this old body of mine. I am not hurt...just a few sore spots and a tender left leg. I will be ok.

Only in Turkana do you have to be mindful to reduce your speed because there may be a herd of resting camels in your path...just around the bend!
